Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the change of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP) and the cardiac index (C.I) is related to the diagnosis of blunt cardiac injury (BCI).

Methods : Between January 2018 and March 2020, 103 patients were diagnosed with traumatic sternum fracture. Among them, 63 patients who admitted the traumatic intensive care unit with injury severity score (ISS) of 15 or higher were included. 33 patients were diagnosed with non-BCI, and 30 patients were diagnosed with BCI.

Results : Age and injury severity score were not significantly different between the groups (p = 0.773 and p = 0.062, respectively). When comparing value pro-BNP of admission, hospital day (HD) 1, and HD 2, there was no difference between the two groups (p = 0.084, p = 0.094 and p = 0.175 respectively). However, when comparing level of C.I, there were differences between the two groups on admission, and HD 3 (p = 0.012 and p = 0.001, respectively).

Conclusion : In conclusion, pro-BNP and BCI has not been noted a statistically significant relation. However, the use of C.I may help as an adjunct to other diagnostic tests of BCI.
