Primary tumors of the lung in childhood and adolescence:
Review of early and long-term surgical outcomes

Purpose : Primary lung tumor is very rare in childhood and adolescence. There is limited pediatric-specific evidence to define optimal management of lung tumor. Our primary aim was to review the early and long-term surgical outcomes of primary lung tumors in childhood and adolescence and to provide more information for this rare disease.
Methods : A retrospective analysis was performed in 24 patients (mean age, 7 years), who received surgical resection of lung tumors, between May 1990 and February 2020. Among them, 13 cases were benign and the other 11 cases were malignant. Long term survival rate analysis was performed for the malignant group.
Results : Most of the patients had no symptom, however, were referred from abnormality in screening chest radiography. Pulmonary resection was performed in 21 patients with lobectomy, 1 patient with segmentectomy and 1 patient with wedge resection. Thoracoscopic surgery was tried in 14 patients, however, conversion to thoracotomy was necessary in two patients (8.3%). There were no in-hospital morbidity and mortality. In the malignant group, one patient died from recurrence of the tumor and the other patient died from complication of adjuvant chemotherapy. The 5-year survival rate of the patients with malignant tumors was 77% (Figure 1).
Conclusion : Early and long-term surgical outcomes of pulmonary resection were favourable in this study. Surgical resection should be considered as a primary treatment in the children with pulmonary tumors.
