Del Nido Cardioplegia in Adult Heart Valve Surgery: Beyond Single Valve Surgery

Background : del Nido cardioplegia has been used for pediatric heart surgery. In the recent years, the use of del Nido cardioplegia has been reported in single valve surgery and CABG with acceptable outcomes, however, reports on its use on more complex adult cardiac procedurs has been scarce.
Methods : The study enrolled a total of 127 adult patients who underwent heart valve surgery with the use of single shot del Nido cardioplegia (1000mL) Between May 2014 and August 2016. During the operation Normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass was used while moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest was used in patients undergoing concomitant arch repair (N=28). In order to compare with the outcomes of valve surgery using blood cardioplegia, 663 patients who underwent surgery during the same period served as control. Propensity score matching was used to adjust for selection bias.
