Background : Research on improving health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is limited especially in lung cancer survivors. The aim of this study was to investigate whether complex survivorship programs including exercise interventions improved the HRQOL of lung and other cancer survivors.

Methods : A prospective study estimating HRQOL [EORTC QLQ-C30] was conducted before and after complex survivorship programs. Each lung, stomach, and colon cancer survivors were participated in the program lasting for 8 weeks, focusing on exercise, nutrition, psychoeducations, and peer support. HRQOL was consisted of global health (GH), functional (FC), and symptom (ST) scores. All scores were on the basis of 100 points.

Results : Cancer survivors (n=37) of lung (n=17), stomach (n=9), and colon (n=11) were participated in the study. Mean age was 62 and men was 19. HRQOL were improved after program (59 to 64 in GH, 82 to 83 in FC and 18 to 17 in ST) but there were no significant differences (P value = 0.27, 0.47, and 0.06) between them. For lung cancer survivors, pre-program FC and ST (82, 20) were worst (82, 18 in stomach; 84, 16 in colon) but post-program GH (68) was best among others (65 in stomach, 54 in colon).

Conclusion : Complex survivorship program may improve HRQOL of cancer patients, especially in lung cancer survivors. Further randomized controlled trial is warranted to establish the effectiveness of this study.
